Fragile Frames: Early 20th Century Nitrate Cinema, remarks by Victor Davis Hanson

Presented with commentary by Victor Davis Hanson, the Martin and Illie Anderson Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, this film screening will feature a collection of rare footage from eight different films shot in the 1930s and 1940s. Scenes include WWII military operations; early 20th-century life across Russia, Japan, and Indonesia; American industrial growth; and a 1933 heavyweight boxing match.

For decades, the Hoover Institution Library & Archives has preserved these rare nitrate motion picture films in sub-zero temperature freezers. This compilation of recently digitized films offers a fascinating deep dive into Hoover's remarkable archives. Colin Stinson, Head of Preservation for the Hoover Institution Library & Archives, will offer remarks about the process of preserving and digitizing these fragile films.
