BeSight, an early-stage company building fatigue detection from eye signals for industrial shift workers, is looking for a scientific co-founder (Chief Scientist; equity seat, part-time until funding) with hands-on fatigue and sleep research experience: PERCLOS, microsleeps, and PVT, PSG or actigraphy as ground truth. What BeSight does:
BeSight puts fatigue warnings in the safety glasses industrial operators already have to wear. The software integrates into eye-tracking glasses (e.g. Pupil Labs Neon) and reads eye signals (PERCLOS, blink duration, gaze, later pupil, and etc.) and flags microsleeps and alertness loss in the operator before an incident. Published eye-closure thresholds show high variance between people and stability within a person, so a fixed threshold misses the individual. BeSight calibrates against each operator's own baseline instead. The first customers are industrial sites with long rotating shifts and regulatory pressure to evaluate operator fatigue, where scheduling rules alone do not measure the individual during the shift. The exact entry market is being confirmed through customer discovery.
What this seat owns:
The science. Study design, ground truth selection, the worker consent architecture, and validation protocols that hold up in front of site EHS/risk/safety managers, worker representatives and investors. The seat is also the responsible owner of the first labeled fatigue dataset from an industrial workforce: how it is collected, labeled, governed and defended. You set the evidence standard. Every detection claim BeSight makes has to survive a hostile expert, and you decide what counts as proof.
Who fits this seat:
- PhD in vision science, sleep science, neuroscience or psychophysiology, or a PhD candidate within a year of defending.
- Has personally designed and run a vigilance, sleep-deprivation or drowsy-driving study with objective ground truth: PVT, PSG, EEG/EOG or actigraphy.
- Direct hands-on experience with PERCLOS, blink duration and microsleeps. Eye-signal experience from perception, attention or consciousness research alone does not qualify; the fatigue and sleep literature is the requirement.
- Has processed raw eye-tracking data yourself (blink detection, pupil preprocessing, artifact rejection) in Python or MATLAB, and programmed your own experiments in PsychoPy, PsychToolbox or similar.
- Has authored a human-subjects protocol that went through ethics review, recruited the participants and run the data collection under it, and is ready to move from lab protocols to field studies on rotating-shift workers.
First 60-90 days:
The list is not definitive and to be determined with the right partner:
- Ground-truth protocol for a field study on rotating-shift workers: which instruments run (PVT, actigraphy, and whatever else you judge feasible on a live shift), when they run, and how labels are produced from them.
- Study protocol ready for ethics review: sample size, shift coverage, consent language a union representative can read, data governance, and pre-registered success and failure criteria.
- Audit of the current measurement definitions against the literature: PERCLOS window, blink-duration thresholds, and what “individual baseline” means operationally (calibration length, drift, re-baselining).
Terms:
- Title: Co-founder, Chief Scientist.
- Equity: 25 to 35%, four-year vesting, one-year cliff. Final figure set at signing by start date and what you bring.
- Salary: none until funding closes. Both founders draw a salary from the first funded round.
- Commitment: part-time until funding closes. I am not full-time yet either. Both of us make the switch together when a pre-seed or accelerator closes.
- Entity: not yet incorporated. Delaware C-Corp on the first committed US check or accelerator acceptance. Founder agreements are signed at incorporation.
- Location: remote to start. The company base moves to San Francisco on funding. Relocation timing is decided together once funding is in.
