We removed the higher of the two shelves in order to allow for seating on both side. You can still store things (KitchenAid, bowls, snacks, whatever) on the bottom shelf, but now you can fit 4 people around the table comfortably instead of just 2. We still have the shelf if you want to re-attach it; you'd just need to secure it yourself. There are a couple small marks on the oak (pictured), but that's all.
