We are looking for someone to help care for our diabetic dog in exchange for free housing this summer. Our dog is an elderly, 90 lb dog with age related special needs. Due to his medical conditions, he cannot be left alone for periods of time longer than about 4 or 5 hours. Typically, either my husband or I are home at different parts of the day. My work schedule is Mon-Fri 8-6 ish, and soon I will not have the ability to work from home or take the dog to work with me, as I do now. My husband is traveling for 10 weeks this summer, so we are looking for someone who can help fill in during the hours where he was providing care.
Requirements
- Must love dogs and cats, and not have allergies to either (we have one of each).
- Priority given to someone who has experience with Type 1 diabetes, either in humans or animals, experience in the medical field.
- Priority given to someone who has experience giving insulin injections.
- Must be able to lift/assist a 90 lb dog. He wears a harness designed for easy lifting and assisted walking/standing. He can mostly support his weight. He just needs help standing up and walking. You would not be carrying him or lifting his full weight.
- Nice to have - familiarity with continuous glucose monitors. But this is easy to learn.
- Your work/school schedule needs to work with the hours that we need care so that the dog is not alone for more than 4-5 hours at a time.
- Our neighborhood is not close to shopping. It is close to transit that brings you directly to shopping and Caltrain in about 15 minutes. Living here without a car is manageable, but you will probably be more comfortable if you have a car.
What we’re offering
- Furnished bedroom - The bedroom is used as our spare room where we store extra stuff and have things like the laser printer. You would need to be okay with me occasionally coming in to get things that are stored there or retrieving print outs from the printer. We try to be as unobtrusive as possible, and will move our most used things out of the room for the summer.
- Private bathroom
- Full access to a large kitchen, common living area, washer/dryer
- A quiet and beautiful garden and a peaceful setting with an expansive view overlooking Silicon Valley
- Off street parking
- We are 15 minutes from Stanford and 5 minutes from 280
Dates available
6/2019 - 9/2019.
Dates are flexible depending on your needs, and can possibly be extended beyond this summer.
