Would you like to relax at the end of the day with the lights down low, Moon and Stars bright, to the song of Crickets and Owls? Thoughtful conversations around the kitchen table? Movie nights? Spontaneous house dinners? We have such a place, up a little lane on a beautiful mixed oak meadow overlooking the Santa Clara Valley, surrounded by hiking trails and vineyards, while still being close to town and freeways.
We have a room available in our little semi-cooperative community, very close to Cupertino, Sunnyvale, Saratoga, Los Gatos, and the 85/De Anza crossing, which gives easy access to the rest of the South Bay and Peninsula. The room is $1260/mo for 190 sq ft, and is a good-sized room with lots of natural light and an impressive view. We are on a few acres which we are stewarding according to Permaculture ethics and principles.
Over the years, we have been a group of teachers, students, permaculturists, eco-designers, primitive skills students, nature awareness practitioners, homesteaders, environmental educators, makers, readers, writers, reskillers, trackers, birders, cooks, chefs, bakers, food preservers, tea-drinkers, meditators, hikers, campers, artists, surfers, bicyclers, improv artists, musicians, therapists, physicists, DIY-ers, and activists (all that in just five people!) Our current group dips from many of those interests and careers, with our own novel mix. We have an extensive reading library of herbal lore, foraging, DIY projects, land stewardship, community building, etc, in a room with a spectacular view of the South Bay.
Folks tend to stick around here, unless life intervenes, and former housemates stay in touch and sometimes come by when we have gatherings. Living here is often described as peaceful, a refuge, and a healing experience. It is something of a haven from the busyness and bustle of Silicon Valley.
On a given day, you may encounter bread-baking, sodas or kombucha brewing, fermenting veggies, spontaneous house meals, shared produce, clothes drying on the line, kitchen table conversations, veggie and herb gardens, house projects, birds, critters, board games, puzzles, acoustic music, singing, coworking, movie nights, greenbelt walks, and...? That said, the house tends to be on the quieter side, most of the time, and folks are very respectful of each others need for quiet and solo versus social time.
Sometimes it's easier to read things as a list, so here we go. We value:
Diversity in skills, experience, culture, ethnicity, gender, religion, spirituality, age, talents, etc, and/or excitement to live in a community which celebrates that diversity
Environmental commitment
Safety-mindedness
Directness, thoughtfulness and sensitivity when communicating
Vegetarian food in-house
Cooperative chore sharing, keep common spaces clean
Fragrance-free household (cleaning products, fabric softener, candles, incense, perfumes, etc)
Gentle, warm lighting after dark
Although not required, experience living in community or shared housing is a plus, as is cultivating a personal practice, like meditation, sit-spotting, journaling, etc.
The room is, again: 190 sq ft at $1260/mo. It has lots of natural light through double-paned windows and an incredible view. Since we conserve water and mostly heat and cool ourselves instead of the house, our shared utilities tend to be low, for the area. The house is quiet and peaceful, with 5 bedrooms, 1.5 baths, kitchen access, and some onsite storage available on mixed oak woodland, grassland, and old orchard, with magnificent views and wildlife wandering the land. Country feel, while very close (~5-7 minutes!) to Highways 85 and 280 and the tech world of Silicon Valley. We are not able to have pets, sorry about that!
In your reply, please give a brief description of yourself, your interests, why you're interested in our house, and any questions you have for us. Please leave your phone number in your message, and I'll contact you if it seems like we'd be a good fit. Along with references and a credit check, an in-person interview is part of the process, where housemates and applicant meet and talk, please plan on this! More photos available on request.
Please forward to folks you think might be interested. Thanks for reading the whole ad, and happy house hunting!
