We're hiring a short-term caregiver to support our 8 year old autistic son as he transitions back to school following a medical absence. Full time now through September ideal, but summer only and part-time possible.
Specialized Caregiver / 1:1 Support for Creative 8-Year-Old (Autistic PDA/2E)
• Full or part-time, flexible start date, short-term
• Up to $55 per hour
• Menlo Park, CA
We are two working parents seeking a highly intuitive, patient, engaging, and experienced caregiver for our 8-year-old son as he transitions back to school/camp after a medical absence. He is a highly intelligent autistic child (2E) with a PDA (pathological demand avoidance) profile, and is very creative, curious, verbal, and active. Our ideal candidate prioritizes connection over compliance and understands how to support a child with a high need for autonomy. We prefer full-time until September with an immediate start, but can accommodate summer-only and some part-time schedules.
Key responsibilities:
• In-home child supervision
• 1:1 support as a summer camp aide
• Facilitate and engage in interest-based play activities (e.g., Rubik’s cubes, 3D printing, paper crafts) to support focus, creativity, and regulation
• Academic support for 2nd grade reading, writing, math
• Drive child to school, camp, and appointments (ideally in your own car)
• Food preparation for child
• Partnering with the family and therapy providers (ABA and OT) to implement behavior plans
Schedule:
• Dates: Immediate start & work until September is ideal, but we can accommodate summer-only.
• Hours: 8:30am-5:30pm M-F is ideal, but we can accommodate some part-time schedules (M-Th, fewer hours).
• School year: Be available if the child comes home early or has appointments, and full-time supervision outside of school hours.
• Summer: Full-time supervision, including attending local summer camps as a 1:1 aide.
• Therapy support: Be present and engaged as needed during in-home ABA and OT sessions.
Qualifications:
• Calm, confident, flexible, patient, and engaging with a low-demand mindset.
• Able to effectively de-escalate aggressive behavior through modeling and redirection.
• Able to engage in prolonged, intense play with full attention.
• Enthusiastic about the child’s special interests (Rubik’s cubes, science, math, crafts, 3D printing).
• Comfortable being on your feet and moving around throughout the day.
• Able to lift up to 40 lbs and safely assist the child when needed (kneeling, bending, quick response).
• Reliable, consistent, and professional.
• Able to drive the child to school, camp, and appointments (ideally in your own car).
• Pass criminal background check, motor vehicle record check, TB test, and have standard vaccines.
• Experience with autistic or special needs children in educational or therapeutic settings preferred.
• Certifications, training, or courses in education, child development, or special needs support preferred.
