Early Literacy Summer Tutor (In-Home, Menlo Park)
Position Type: Summer / Part-Time / In-Home
Compensation: $65 – $85 / hour (Dependent on experience/degree program)
Schedule: Flexible. Ideal timeline is 2–3 days per week, 45–60 minute sessions (morning preferred).
We are looking for an inspiring, knowledgeable early childhood educator to work 1-on-1 with our energetic 5-year-old this summer. Our primary goal is to foster a joyful, confident relationship with print and build foundational decoding skills as he prepares for the upcoming school year.
As a family, we deeply value the science of reading. We are not looking for a babysitter or someone to hand him passive workbooks; we want a structured, play-based literacy mentor who can bring early reading concepts to life through multi-sensory engagement.
What We Are Looking For
Educational Background: Ideally an active Master’s or Ph.D. student in Education (GSE), Child Development, or a related field.
Early Literacy Expertise: Strong familiarity with structured literacy frameworks, explicit phonics instruction, phonemic awareness, and early decoding strategies.
The Right Energy: High energy, patience, and a gift for keeping a 5-year-old deeply engaged. You know how to pivot a lesson when focus wanes and seamlessly integrate movement, games, and tactile elements (like magnetic letters or sound boxes).
Key Responsibilities
Design and execute fun, 45-to-60-minute interactive reading sessions tailored to a 5-year-old's developmental stage.
Focus on core fundamentals: phonemic awareness, letter-sound correspondence, blending, and high-frequency sight words.
Maintain a positive, low-pressure environment where mistakes are celebrated as part of learning.
Provide lightweight, actionable updates to parents on progress and quick ways we can reinforce your concepts during daily family reading time.
Logistics & Safety
Location: In-home sessions in Menlo Park. (Ample parking available, close to public transit/campus).
Supplies: We are happy to purchase any specific text titles, manipulative tools, or learning materials you recommend for your curriculum.
