Note: This workshop was previously titled "Ethical AI Management" with speaker Rachel Gillum, which has been canceled. Instead, in partnership with Research Data Services and Stanford University Libraries, VPGE is excited to invite graduate students and postdocs to "Working with GenAI - Towards a Reflective Practice" with instructor Claudia Engel (Academic Technology Specialist for Anthropology). See details below!
This workshop is for those who have engaged with Generative AI anywhere in their scholarly research (writing, coding, designing, etc.) or are interested in doing so.
We will dig deeper into how GenAI invites us to interact with it and consider if and how its design may impact our behavior and academic work. We will take a close look at examples of our own experiences with the tool, and scrutinize the various affordances, pitfalls, and our reactions. The goal is to work towards a more reflective practice when interacting with GenAI, irrespective of specific domains.
Bring your curiosity, your questions, and your experiences to share.
Please register to attend. Registration is exclusively open to current Stanford affiliates and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Lunch will be provided for in-person attendees. Virtual attendees will receive a Zoom link upon registration.
Facilitated by: Claudia Engel (Academic Technology Specialist for Anthropology)
Claudia Engel collaborates with students and faculty in the Anthropology Department on digital research projects and data analysis. She teaches GIS, digital methods, and critical data practices and is part of Stanford Libraries’ Research Data Services Division. As an Anthropologist, Claudia approaches AI as a social technology and is troubled by its impact on power structures, labor practices and the environment. As a technologist, she is interested in how generative AI shapes the production of knowledge and academic inquiry. She values teaching as an opportunity to explain better and think harder.
