Breakfast at DAAAS with Dr. Simukai Chigudu

Join the Department of African and African American Studies (DAAAS) for a breakfast meeting with Dr. Simukai Chigudu. Dr. Chigudu is a Professor of African Politics at Oxford and the author of Chasing Freedom: Coming of Age At the End of Empire, a book that intertwines the colonial and neocolonial history of Zimbabwe with his personal and family experiences. The book raises many issues of interest in psychology, including to questions of belonging, identity, intergenerational trauma, and becoming (e.g., see his earlier prominent writings in The Guardian on the legacy and representation of Cecil Rhodes in Oxford).

This meeting is specifically for students whose graduate or undergraduate research focuses on:

• African Politics and History (particularly Zimbabwe/Southern Africa)
• Colonialism and its afterlives
• The legacy of racism and the Rhodes Must Fall movement
• The Black experience in the Diaspora
• Psychological themes of identity, belonging, intergenerational trauma, and becoming.

This is an opportunity for students to connect with Dr. Chigudu, discuss their research interests, and engage in an informal conversation ahead of his talk, Chasing Freedom: Coming of Age at the End of Empire, on Wednesday, September 30
